Hanuman

Hanuman, the monkey god, was a devout devotee of Lord Rama and had played a very important role in the battle between Lord Rama and Ravana. On his forehead ‘Hanuman’ bears the white V-sign of Urdhva Pundra tilak. Placed upon it is a colourful, painted ‘crown’.
Because of his bravery, perseverance, strength and devoted service, Hanuman is regarded as a perfect symbol of selflessness and loyalty.  Worship of Hanuman helps the individual to counter the bad karma borne out of selfish action, and grants the believer fortitude and strength in his or her own trials during the journey of life.  Hanuman is also invoked in fights against sorcery and protective amulets depicting him are extremely popular among his devotees.
Cherial Mask Making
Cheial masks are modelled along the  theme of ancient Indian mythology and local folklore.

The process is very complicated, one has to use various ingredients like sawdust, cotton strips, water, tamarind etc. The following 6 steps are used to make the mask:
Sculpting –‘Poniki’ wood is used to craft a figurine of choice and give it a crude form
Plastering – a fine mixture of tamarind seed paste and sawdust is applied over the base form
Bandaging – after the mixture dries up, cotton strips are layered of the figurine
Smoothening – liquid lime and chalk powder paste are coated to smoothen the surface
Coloring – On the base color, detailing such as eyes, limbs and accessories are intrinsically painted.
The colour of the face & skin is decided by the nature of the character - blue & yellow are for Gods and Goddesses respectively. Brown or darker shades are for demons, while pink & skin tones are for humans. In the past, natural dyes were used. White was obtained from ground sea shells, black from lamp soot, yellow from turmeric, blue from indigo; & the others from various vegetable dyes & powdered stones.
Varnishing – to give a glossy look a coat of varnish is applied
