Get away from the heatwave with this fine eco-friendly hat made from water hyacinth, a must-have for festivals, holidays and sun-soaked weekends. The blackish olive colour of the hat is the result of it being dyed in tea water and left to dry, hence making it 100% eco-friendly. So easy to wear you will barely notice it there, but so sleek in style, you will surely be noted.
Water Hyacinth Hat is made of water hyacinth (locally called “Pani Meteka” in Assamese) which is abundant in the state of Assam and needs to be tapped optimally for production of utility as well as designer items like mats, hats, vanity bags, shoes and lampshades.
Mature water hyacinths which are 15-30 inches long are cut by these artisans and their stems split open and dried for 5-6 days. The dried material will turn brown and will make a cracking sound when crumpled. These stems are dyed as per choice of the product and are given proper shape as per the final product to make. Then frames are made and weaving is done as per requirement of the targeted product. Finally the products are varnished for a glossy look. These products are given anti-fungal treatment.
These products are very light in weight, cost effective and durable among others.
